My Grandfather -   Stanley Charles Artus, 4th from the  left, middle row. Air raid warden during the second world war. He was born in Gloucester in 1905. The  youngest child of Alfred and Kate.  For some 26 years he worked as a  solicitors clerk for Messrs Taynton and Sons in Gloucester. He was active in the Scouting movement and was a member of the International order of good templers. He then moved to Weymouth in 1945 where he and his wife ran a bed and breakfast. Soon after the war the family, by now  including daughter Margaret and son Michael, moved to Jersey. They first of  all took over the Bohemia Cafe, in Portlet, before again running a boarding establishment - The Collingwood Private Hotel.
In 1953 it was decided to move to New Zealand. They returned to Jersey two years later and remained for about 12 months before deciding to return to New Zealand for good in December 1957. Margaret, by now married, decided to stay in Jersey, so only Michael accompanied them on the trip. In New Zealand they decided to settle in Tauranga, where they bought a house in Norris Avenue. Stanley ran a Four Square (Grocery shop). He died in 1961 aged 56, and is buried in Tauranga cemetry.
